(Updated for 2019) Like pretty much everyone who backpacks, I’ve been looking for ways for lighten my load. Over the past three years, with the purchase of a few new items and the leaving behind of a few more, I’ve cut just over 7 pounds from my pack weight!

At home, I don’t have any problem eating enough, but when I’ve been exerting a lot, especially during prime alpine backpacking season when it’s hot and my energy is easily depleted, I have a hard time wanting to eat on backpacking trips. And I’m a picky eater, so that makes it even harder!

Finding good meals for backpacking is not easy, especially if you are a picky eater like me. I tried two meals from Bushka’s Kitchen and found both to taste fantastic.

The Tarptent Moment DW is a lightweight one-person double-wall tent. This is the pre-2019 version that I purchased at the end of 2016 and have used on over 20 backpacking and camping trips.

Instant mashed potatoes are an easy to make meal for backpacking. No cooking on the stove is required, so this recipe is great for those who just want to add boiling water to a meal and will be ready to eat in 10 minutes or less.

Instant oatmeal is easy enough to make, but doesn’t keep me fueled for very long, so I add almonds, hemp seeds and milk powder for protein and freeze-dried blueberries and raspberries for flavor.

Chicken Piccata is one of my favorite Italian meals that I make at home. I adapted the recipe to make it work using dehydrated and freeze-dried ingredients, and it’s now my favorite backpacking meal.
