Even a small pillow upgrade can change your experience on backpacking trips, providing support for more restful sleep and helping prevent neck and shoulder stiffness in the morning.

A good pillow is essential for sleeping well on backpacking trips. After trying stuff sacks filled with clothing, I found that I needed more support, especially when sleeping on my side. I’ve tried quite a few air pillows and prefer those that include synthetic or down fill on top for a softer feel, along with an indented center so it doesn’t feel like I’m sleeping on a balloon. Depending on the pillow, I usually fill them partway with air for better comfort (about two-thirds full).

The options I’ve included here range from ultralight air pillows to foam pillows, with some hybrids that layer down or synthetic fill over an air bladder for extra softness.

Types of Backpacking Pillows

• Clothing in a stuff sack: Ultralight and simple. Works in a pinch, but often lacks the support needed for consistent comfort.
• Air pillows: Lightest and most compact. Great for weight-conscious trips. Best comfort comes from inflating about two-thirds full.
• Air pillows with added down or synthetic fill: Lightweight with extra softness. My personal favorite for combining packability with a more pillow-like feel.
• Foam pillows: Most comfortable. Offer great support but are heavier and bulkier — better for short trips where weight isn’t as critical.

No matter which pillow type you choose, finding the right balance of comfort, weight, and packability can make your nights on the trail much more restful — and your days more enjoyable.
