Guide to 2022 Holiday Sales for Outdoor Gear

Now that the holiday sales have started, I put together this handpicked guide to outdoor gear sales for 2022, only listing items that I’ve personally used and would recommend to others.

This is the best time of year to make gear purchases due to discounts – some of which are only offered once per year. This list will be updated throughout the 2022 holiday season, so come back often to get the best deals on gear for hiking, backpacking and camping.

Apparel & Outerwear

Outdoor Vitals Ventus Hoodie: an ultralight insulated mid-layer that provides a lot of warmth for the weight. This is my go-to mid-layer for hiking and has replaced the fleece layers I used to wear due to being more comfortable, weather-resistant, and the ability to be worn as a mid or outer layer depending on conditions.

Outdoor Vitals Vario jacket review

Outdoor Vitals Vario Jacket: an ultralight outer layer tailored for active pursuits with bodymapped synthetic insulation and underarm perforations for ventilation. This jacket is made to go over a base layer or mid-layer, and works especially well with the Ventus Hoodie for the ultimate in flexible warmth. At only 8.3 oz. for a women’s small, this is a super warm jacket at an ultralight weight and that replaces the insulated jackets I used to take on hiking and backpacking trips. I especially like the soft fabric that has a weather-resistant finish, the raglan-sleeve design for comfort, and the sleek look of this jacket.

REI Co-op Flash Hybrid Hoodie

REI Co-op Flash Hybrid Insulated Hoodie Jacket: this lightweight hooded jacket includes stretchy fleece panels on the sides for ease in movement, thumbholes, and a hood with an elastic brim. Heavier than the ultralight options listed here and not as warm, I like this jacket for hiking or going on walks in my neighborhood. I especially like having multiple pockets, including two hand pockets, a chest pocket, and two inside drop pockets. Made from recycled materials in a Fair Trade Certified factory.

Enlightened Equipment Torrid Jacket

Enlightened Equipment Torrid Jacket: the lightest of the jackets listed here at 7 oz., the Torrid is extremely warm for the weight. The design is very basic, with two hand pockets and a hood but no other extras. Custom order a jacket in the color combination that you prefer. My jacket uses 10 denier fabrics on the inside and outside. For a more durable finish, 20 denier fabric is an option for the outside.

REI Co-op Norseland 2.0 Parka

REI Co-op Norseland 2.0 Parka: this is an extremely warm down parka that I use when I’m hanging out at camp. It’s much too warm for active pursuits, but great for frigid temps on winter adventures.

Backpacking Gear

REI Flash Air 2 Backpacking Tent Review

REI Co-op Flash Air 2 Backpacking Tent: an ultralight backpacking tent with plenty of room for two people at a lower price than similar options. This is a hybrid single-wall tent only weighs 2 lbs, 2 oz. and unlike other 2-person tents, it comfortably fits two people. Overall – for the light weight, spacious interior, and quality build – the low price of the REI Flash Air 2 is hard to beat.

Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt

Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt: the Revelation is consistently the most popular quilt for backpacking due to the low weight and high quality made-in-the-U.S. build. Available stock or custom made with options for warmth rating, fill weight, length, width, and exterior and interior colors, you can order a quilt exactly the way you want it.

backpacking tent: Tarptent Moment DW

Tarptent Moment DW tent: this is a lightweight one-person double-wall tent with two doors. Made from 30D silnylon, this tent is more durable than most backpacking tents and withstands varying conditions quite well. Setup is quite easy, using only one pole and two stakes. A bonus is that the inner tent is connected to the outer fly, so it won’t get wet while setting up in the rain.

Therm-a-Rest Xtherm sleeping pad

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xtherm Sleeping Pad: the warmest rated sleeping bag for the weight, the Xtherm provides incredible warmth with an R-value of 6.9 and only weighs 15 ounces for the regular tapered version. I’ve had this pad for over seven years with no signs of wear yet.

Camping Gear

REI Co-op Half Dome 2+ Tent

REI Co-op Half Dome 2+ Tent: this is a full-featured tent with an interior that is larger than most 2-person tents. At 54″ wide by 90″ long, there is more than enough room for two people plus gear. Features include numerous interior pockets, four roof vents for ventilation, and full coverage rainfly. Easy to setup and well-made, I’ve been using this tent for over five years with no signs of wear.
