The Altara Arcadia is a unique four-person tent with doors on all sides, dual convertible awnings, and an open design that provides exceptional views, ventilation, and living space.

When I’m car camping, I usually prefer a larger tent that allows room to relax rather than something designed only for sleeping. The Altara Arcadia works especially well for comfortable basecamp-style camping, with a design that feels more like a screened-in porch or cabin than a traditional tent. My favorite way to use it is for solo or two-person glamping trips, set up with cots and a side table, with plenty of extra space for gear.

What I Like About the Altara Arcadia

Easy setup with high-quality materials

The Arcadia is straightforward to set up, even when camping solo. The pre-attached, color-coded pole system makes the process simple, and the included instructions are easy to follow the first time pitching it.

I appreciate the attention to materials throughout the tent, with heavy-duty and durable fabrics that include waterproof coatings and UV protection. The aluminum tent poles are an upgrade over the fiberglass poles found on many budget tents, and the steel poles for the awning provide the strength needed to keep the extended area stable and tensioned.

Once pitched, the fabric stays nicely taut without sagging or loose sections that can flap in the wind. While the tent is freestanding, it benefits from being fully guyed out in windy conditions for added stability (extra guylines for this are included).

The included stakes have a long nail-style design that makes them easy to drive into the ground and remove when needed, and the plastic head includes convenient notches for securing guylines — something I haven’t seen on many other stakes.

Unique A-frame design with more usable space

While the Arcadia draws inspiration from A-frame cabin structures, the interior feels much more open than that style typically suggests. Instead of the sloping sidewalls common in many four-person tents — which tend to limit usable space — it uses near-vertical walls to maximize livable area throughout.

A 75-inch peak height adds to that sense of space, making it easy to stand up and move around comfortably without the interior feeling cramped.

Four doors provide multiple access points

The Arcadia features four large doors — one on each side — allowing you to configure access based on how you’re using the space, which is especially helpful in tighter campsites.

The large doors and inner mesh panels also provide excellent ventilation and wide-open views, creating a comfortable place to hang out when the weather turns.

With the rainfly rolled back at each door, the shelter feels especially open and closely connected to the outdoors — something I really appreciate compared to tents with fewer doors and less inner mesh.

This design also promotes strong airflow, keeping it noticeably cooler in warm weather than other four-person tents I’ve used — including the Snow Peak Alpha Breeze and Big Agnes Bunk House 4 — making it my preferred option for summer camping.

For clear nights, the inner tent’s upper fabric panels can also be rolled back for stargazing — a feature I haven’t seen on any other tent.

Since I camp in the Pacific Northwest, where overnight temperatures are cooler and light rain is common, I always use the rainfly. Two side vents on the rainfly provide additional airflow, which helps keep air moving through the tent. On a recent rainy Oregon Coast trip with overnight and morning rain, everything inside stayed dry, and condensation wasn’t an issue at all.

Convertible awnings add useful living space

The two convertible awnings are another standout feature. They can be deployed to create additional protected space or cover larger items like a bicycle. I typically use just one awning, but having the option for two is helpful depending on campsite layout and available space. When closed, they create large vestibule areas for gear storage. Note that the tent comes with two awning poles (not four), so using both awnings at once requires additional poles.

Modular options add versatility

One of the most unique aspects of the Arcadia is its modular design. The tent body and rainfly/pole structure can be used independently, while the two awnings create additional ways to connect the tent to other shelters or covered spaces. This gives the Arcadia a level of flexibility that isn’t found in many traditional tent designs.

The different setup options include:

• Full tent setup with rainfly for maximum weather protection
• Rainfly and poles only as an open shelter
• Dual awning setup for expanded living space
• Flex-open configuration for solo camping
• Tent-to-canopy setup
• Tent-to-vehicle setup

For most trips, I find the full tent setup the most practical, using the inner tent with the rainfly and a single awning over the front entrance. On a recent rainy trip, I used the awning to connect the Arcadia to my popup canopy, creating a larger covered living area that gave me a dry space to relax and cook meals.

While I don’t personally see much benefit in connecting the tent directly to my vehicle, I can see how this feature would appeal to those who want covered access to an open hatchback or truck tailgate area.

Two configurations I haven’t tried yet are the open shelter option, which uses the poles and rainfly to create a large canopy, and the flex-open configuration. In the flex-open setup, the inner tent can be adjusted to reduce the sleeping area and increase the covered space under the rainfly.

Additional features

The storage bag that comes with the tent is sized large enough to fit all of the tent components – even when packing it up after a trip. This hasn’t always been the case with other tents I’ve used, so it’s nice not having to struggle to get everything back in.

For hanging lights, there’s a loop in the top of the inner tent for hanging a lantern, and while there aren’t additional loops for more lighting, I was able to attach string lights using small binder clips along the inner tent seams.

For additional interior storage, there are two small pockets located near floor level. I don’t find them especially useful since they often end up getting blocked depending on how I set up the tent. That said, with the overall interior space, I didn’t really miss using them.

Great value for the price

At $349, the Arcadia is priced lower than many premium four-person tents, but still manages to include features you usually see in more expensive models. The combination of durable materials, spacious interior, and modular options makes this one of the better values I’ve seen in a large car camping tent. I’m looking forward to using the Arcadia on many more camping trips and will update this review with more info about durability after longer-term use.
