3-Layer Pertex Shield Technology

A big part of what makes the Rain-Motion stand out is its 3-layer Pertex Shield construction, which balances waterproof protection, breathability, and comfort during active use.

The outer face fabric is treated with a PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) finish, helping moisture bead up and shed before soaking into the material. Beneath that is a waterproof, windproof membrane that blocks outside moisture while still allowing sweat vapor to escape. On the inside, a lightweight fabric backer protects the membrane and creates a smoother, softer next-to-skin feel that reduces friction over layers and improves overall comfort while moving.

Compared to stiffer rain jackets, 3-layer Pertex Shield feels lighter, quieter, and less clammy while still offering solid durability for hiking and backpack use. It should also hold up better over time than lighter 2 or 2.5-layer rain shells, especially with repeated pack use or in higher-abrasion environments.

Fit That Moves Well on Trail

This jacket is clearly built for movement, which is reflected in the Rain-Motion name.

It has an athletic, close-to-body fit that isn’t restrictive, with articulated patterning — shaped panels designed to follow natural body movement and reduce pulling or bunching — so it feels natural in motion on trail. When hiking with a pack, I’ve found it allows for freedom of movement through the shoulders and arms, while avoiding a boxy feel that can get in the way of layering. It also works well over light insulation, adding warmth without feeling bulky or restricting movement.

The cap-style hood uses elastic binding with an adjustable rear cord, making it easy to dial in a secure fit without losing visibility. I also prefer the elasticized cuffs over hook-and-loop closures, which can catch on other gear.

A few other design details work especially well for hiking:

My Experience

I’ve used this jacket on rainy spring hikes along the coast, in the Coast Range mountains, and on forested hikes in the Cascade foothills. At just 8.4 ounces, this is a lightweight shell that works well for hiking and backpacking. And it packs down small, which is something I always value in rain gear since it often spends a lot of time in my pack.

Besides the waterproof nature of this rain jacket, what I’ve noticed most is the breathability. Even without pit zips, it seems to vent better than other rain jackets I’ve used. During active hiking, I don’t get as sweaty inside when working uphill or moving at a steady pace.

The fabric is also softer and quieter than many rain shells, avoiding the loud swooshing sound that stiffer waterproof jackets can have. In wet conditions, the waterproof performance has been solid so far. Even when hiking in periods of rain, it hasn’t wetted out on me, though I haven’t had it out in a prolonged all-day downpour yet.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this jacket has worked really well for my hiking use. I especially like the athletic fit, the strong breathability during active hikes, and how small it packs down when I’m carrying it in my backpack.
