Features

The shape of this quilt is wider in the torso and then tapers at the top to wrap around your body and prevent drafts, while the cinch cord, draft collar and a snap at the top help to keep warmth in. A nice feature not included on most quilts are the drawcord retention loops to keep the cord from dangling in your face when the top is cinched shut.

Utilizing new ExpeDRY technology by Allied Feather in treating the down fill, the StormLoft dries faster in wet and humid conditions. As stated on the Outdoor Vitals website, “ExpeDRY works through a permanent and chemical-free bonding of non-toxic gold particles to the down cluster which actively attack humidity inside the insulation and keeps the entire chamber, including the insulation, dry in extreme conditions. The ExpeDRY gold particles create an electro-static shield that provides a small hydrophobic barrier and weakens the hydrogen bond that allows water to form. By attacking the hydrogen bond of the water molecule, ExpeDRY helps keeps moisture from condensing into droplets (as is the case with performance in use) and helps break that bond to help any water that may be present to dry faster (as is the case in home laundry).”

Two elastic straps are included for attaching the quilt to your sleeping pad. The clips slide to make the quilt opening wider or narrower so you can customize the fit according to your needs.

The footbox has an anatomical shape so your feet can lay naturally and yet have room to move freely without added space that can create cold spots.

The StormLoft packs down small in the included dry bag, and also includes a large bag for storage.

My Experience with the StormLoft Quilt

After using this quilt in overnight temps in the high 30s, I find it to be warmer than similarly rated quilts and wouldn’t hesitate to take it on colder trips versus my 0 degree sleeping bag. I also like the fabric used – it’s soft yet durable – and the quilt is very well made with no extra threads hanging loose or down escaping. While the tapered top helps to keep more warmth in, I’d prefer a wider quilt at the top to avoid having it feel like a sleeping bag does. Regardless, I think it’s a very high quality option for backpackers at a good price point.
