With 2.5 inches of closed-cell foam insulation and a freezer-style gasket, it offers features I’d expect from higher-priced coolers. I also appreciate the high quality details in this cooler, including T-style latches, rope handles for easier carrying, and a place to add a lock to keep animals out.

Features & My Experience

Lightweight Design

I chose the ultra-light version versus RTIC’s ultra-tough line of coolers to make it easier to carry from my car to the camp kitchen. For carrying, the rope handles on the sides make it much easier to get a secure grip, especially when the cooler is full.

I also prefer the horizontal design over taller, more vertical coolers. It makes it easier to see and access the food inside without reaching as far down, while the shorter height also makes it useful as an extra camp seat when needed.

Insulation and Ice Packs

I don’t use loose ice in coolers, preferring to layer ice packs throughout the cooler to keep everything cold. I place large ice packs along the sides, then layer smaller ice packs on the bottom and in the recessed area on the lid.

This setup has worked well for me on 3-4 day trips. I do make a point of keeping the cooler out of direct sunlight, and I typically camp on days with highs below 75 degrees, so if you are camping in warmer conditions, this method may not work as well for you.

On a recent camping trip at the Oregon Coast, I was cooking for four people, and the cooler held all the groceries we needed for three full days of meals. Everything stayed cold using only ice packs.

For those who prefer using ice instead, the cooler has two drainage holes for draining water.

Latches and Lock

This is the first cooler I’ve used with T-style rubber latches, and I appreciate how they keep the lid tightly closed while being easier to operate than the hard-sided latches I’ve used on other coolers. The freezer-style gasket also creates a tight seal around the lid, locking in the cold.

I really appreciate having the option to add a lock to this cooler, which is something I haven’t had before. Keeping food protected from animals is important when camping, especially in areas where raccoons and bears can be a concern — both are very smart and have figured out how to access food from campers. Being able to lock the cooler will allow me to leave it outside overnight rather than storing it in my car.

Additional Features

The cooler includes tie-down slots for securing it in a truck bed, boat, or other vehicle. Stainless steel hardware helps prevent rust, while non-skid rubber feet keep the cooler securely in place. It also has a built-in bottle opener, a convenient addition for drinks around camp.

This RTIC cooler has been a great fit for the way I camp. I especially appreciate getting the capacity and insulation I want without the extra weight and higher price of similar coolers.
