My Experience Testing the Salewa Pedroc 2 Max

Salewa Pedroc 2 Max Hiking Shoe

Shoe reviews are always somewhat subjective since everyone’s feet and preferences are different. For reference, I normally hike in Altra Olympus trail running shoes, along with other trail runners including the Topo Athletic Pursuit, Altra Lone Peak, and Hoka Speedgoat.

For the Pedroc 2 Max, I ordered my usual hiking shoe size (8-1/2) and found them comfortable right out of the box. Before taking them on longer hikes, I wore them on a couple of 4-mile walks around my neighborhood to get used to the feel.

I tested the Pedroc 2 Max on steep trails in the Cascades in both Oregon and Washington, along with hikes in Oregon’s Coast Range mountains. Compared to my usual trail runners, they feel noticeably more supportive and protective, with a firmer and more structured feel that gave me more confidence on uneven and rocky terrain.

Cushioning, Support, and Protection

The Pedroc 2 Max has a highly cushioned design with a 30.5 mm stack height, which helps absorb impact and reduce foot fatigue on longer hikes. At the same time, the midsole still feels responsive rather than overly soft or squishy.

Compared to trail runners, the Pedroc 2 Max feels much more protective underfoot. On rocky trails, I appreciated that I couldn’t feel the rocks, which helped keep my feet from getting as tired over the course of a hike. I also felt more stable and protected on uneven terrain due to the integrated stability plate. And since I’m prone to bumping into things on trail, I appreciate the extra protection on the front and backs of the shoe.

Grip and Stability on Steep Trails

One of the strongest features of the Pedroc 2 Max is the traction. The Pomoca outsole provided excellent grip on steep trails with loose dirt and rock, especially on descents where footing matters most. At no point did I feel like my feet were slipping underneath me on downhill sections. The traction reminded me a lot of hiking shoes that use Vibram outsoles, with an aggressive tread pattern that feels secure on rocky terrain.

The shoes use Salewa’s 3F System, which connects the heel area with the lacing system to improve fit and stability, especially around the midfoot and heel. In practice, it helped keep my heel locked in place and my foot from moving around on uneven terrain without making the shoe feel stiff. Beneath the mesh upper, a reinforced microfiber layer adds structure and abrasion resistance while keeping weight low. Together, these elements create a secure fit that stays comfortable on rocky and uneven trails.

Breathability and Water Drainage

The breathable mesh upper worked well on warmer hikes. On a steep uphill climb where I was sweating heavily, my feet still didn’t feel overly hot inside the shoes. They aren’t quite as airy as the trail running shoes I normally wear, but that tradeoff comes with more structure and durability.

At the end of one warm hike, I soaked my feet in a creek while still wearing them to see how well they would drain. Water escaped through the mesh fairly quickly during the walk back to the car, which matters to me because I sometimes need to ford water crossings and prefer shoes that can shed water and continue drying on the move.

Fit and Comfort

Fit is important with any hiking shoe, and the Pedrocs feel secure and stable on uneven terrain without feeling overly restrictive or tight. The heel stayed locked in place well, which helped prevent rubbing and kept my feet from sliding side to side on steep trails and on descents, where your feet naturally slide forward inside your shoes.

The toe box is not as wide as what I’m used to with Altras, but I still had enough room for my toes without feeling cramped. That extra room matters a lot to me — I’ve worn too many hiking boots in the past that squished my toes together and left me with sore feet afterwards.

The 6 mm heel drop is a nice balance for me. Shoes with a higher drop can sometimes create pressure on the balls of my feet, while very low-drop shoes can occasionally aggravate my calves or ankles. The Pedrocs landed comfortably in between the two.

Durability Compared to Trail Running Shoes

Durability is one of the biggest advantages I see with a hiking shoe like the Pedroc 2 Max compared to lightweight trail runners.

Trail runners tend to wear out quickly for me, especially around the cushioning near the ankle collar and at the toe box where holes often start to form. The tread also usually wears down faster than I would like. In general, most trail runners only last me a couple of months before showing signs of wear.

The Pedrocs feel much more durable overall, from the reinforced upper materials to the outsole construction. I’ve also had good long-term durability from a waterproof pair of Salewa hiking shoes I’ve tested, which I’ve worn for over a year with no visible wear.

Who Are the Salewa Pedroc 2 Max Shoes Best For?

Salewa Pedroc 2 Max Hiking Shoe

A great option for hikers who want something lighter and more agile than a traditional hiking boot, while still adding more support, protection, and durability than most trail running shoes provide. They work especially well for steep, rocky terrain and long hiking days where comfort and stability both matter.
