An affordable option for car campers, the Sea to Summit Boab sleeping bag combines synthetic insulation, recycled materials, and a roomy fit for a comfortable night outdoors.

I’ve been testing out the Sea to Summit Boab 30°F sleeping bag on recent camping trips, and find that it’s a good balance of comfort and features at an affordable price. For camping, I prefer synthetic-fill sleeping bags versus down since synthetic insulation is more resistant to moisture and retains insulating abilities better when damp. It’s also less expensive and non-allergenic – and much easier to wash after a trip.

I also appreciate Sea to Summit’s commitment to sustainability: the materials are recycled, bluesign-approved, and the company supports 1% for the Planet. It’s always nice to see a product that performs well and aligns with eco-conscious values.

Features

The 50-denier fabrics used in the Boab are soft but sturdy enough to handle regular use, with a DWR (durable water resistant) finish on the outer fabric that helps repel light moisture — ideal for damp mornings and wet weather. The interior uses the same 50-denier fabric and feels comfortable against my skin — no plasticky or crinkly feel like in some bags.

For me, the relaxed rectangular shape of this bag makes it more comfortable than a standard mummy bag. As a side sleeper who moves around at night, I really appreciate not feeling constricted. I also like that the hood is slightly wider than on a typical bag, and there’s a cinch cord if you want to snug it up on cooler nights.

Functionally, the bag includes a few nice features for flexibility in use. The two-way zipper runs smoothly with no snags and makes it so you can open up the footbox for ventilation or unzip the whole thing and use it as a quilt — something I really appreciate for warmer nights. It also has a draft tube along the zipper to help retain heat.

Sizing and Temperature Rating

This bag is available in several sizes, and it’s worth picking one that fits your body well. You want enough room to be comfortable, but not so much that you lose heat. I used the regular, but at 5’1″, it was longer than I needed. That extra space at the bottom can actually make it harder to stay warm, so I’d recommend the short version for anyone on the petite side. And while the bag is rated to 30°F, I found it comfortable down to about 40°F — so consider the 15° version if you are a cold sleeper or you frequently camp in colder conditions.

Storage

The Boab includes a compression sack for taking up less space when packing up. Instead of rolling the bag, I find it’s easier to just stuff it in — much quicker when breaking camp. For long-term storage, it’s best to keep the bag in a larger stuff sack (not included) to avoid compressing the insulation — this helps preserve its loft and warmth over time.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Boab 30°F is a high quality sleeping bag at a very approachable price point. It’s especially well-suited for car camping or relaxed backpacking trips where weight isn’t your biggest concern but comfort and reliability matter.
