Gear Review: Survival Hax Camping Cooking Kit

If you are looking for a lightweight and inexpensive cookset for camping or backpacking, the Survival Hax Camping Cooking Kit is worth considering. The full kit weighs less than a pound, and everything nests together for ease in carrying in the included stuff sack.

With two pans, a lid, two plastic bowls, a metal spork, bamboo spatula, soup spoon and loofah, this kit includes everything you need to cook simple meals on a camping or backpacking stove. I recently used this cookset while camping for two nights at Smith Rock State Park.

Both pans are non-stick, lightweight, and feature plastic-covered folding handles that don’t get hot while you cook. Unlike other folding handles, these stay in place and don’t fold back in while you are cooking. The included lid fits the deeper pan, perfect for heating soups and stews, or just boiling water. In spite of the low cost, all three pieces are good quality and seem like they will be very durable over the long haul.

Other than the pans, my favorite piece in the kit is the bamboo spatula, long enough to stir what you are cooking, and flat on the end instead of rounded, making it easier to scrape the bottom of the pan to get every last bit of food.

The set also includes a small loofah, which is useful for cleaning without scratching, and it weighs almost nothing.

The two bowls are a bit on the small side, but they do the job (and more importantly, fit inside the pans for storage). The metal spork and soup spoon are also foldable, although I would probably take my plastic two-sided spoon/fork instead.

For backpacking use, I would probably only take the smaller pan, lid, spatula and loofah (these four items weigh 7.5 ounces). I usually eat right out of the pan, which also means washing fewer dishes.
