Review: Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow

Updated 07/05/2026

A modular three-piece backpacking pillow that balances support, height, and softness with adjustable comfort for better sleep at camp.

Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow

The Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow is easily the most comfortable pillow I’ve ever used for backpacking. It achieves that level of comfort with a three-piece system made up of an inflatable air bladder, a soft pillowcase, and a removable down topper. Together, these components create a customizable backpacking pillow with adjustable firmness and loft that rivals other backpacking pillow options.

The 2026 version of the SoftTop Pillow features a contoured pillowcase and a wider opening, making it easier to insert the bladder and topper. The pillowcase keeps the components securely aligned throughout the night while providing a soft, comfortable surface against your skin. Zenbivy offers two topper options — a lightweight version and an overstuffed version — or you can skip the topper altogether and use a down jacket or fleece inside the pillowcase with the bladder for a lighter, minimalist setup that weighs just 2.3 ounces.

What I Like About the Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow

Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow

A good pillow makes a huge difference on backpacking trips, especially for side sleepers. After years of experimenting with stuff sacks filled with clothing and various inflatable pillows, I’ve found I sleep best with a setup that combines adjustable air support with a softer top layer rather than relying on air alone.

The SoftTop has become my go-to because it offers noticeably more height and support than most backpacking pillows I’ve used. With the overstuffed topper, it reaches around five inches tall, which works especially well for side sleeping and helps keep my head comfortably elevated through the night. I have severe sleep apnea and don’t bring my CPAP on backpacking trips, so that extra height is especially important for me — it raises my head and helps me sleep better than when using lower-profile pillows.

Comfort and Support

The inflatable bladder is easy to fine-tune, and I usually fill it about two-thirds full to avoid the firm, “balloon” feel some air pillows have. The down topper adds a thick soft surface on top that allows my head to sink in, feeling more like sleeping on my pillow at home. I also like that the pillowcase is made from soft polyester pongee that feels similar to a cotton sheet, rather than the slick, plastic-like fabric commonly found on outdoor gear.

Modular Features

Between the light and overstuffed options for the topper, I prefer the overstuffed version for the best balance of softness and support. When paired with a Zenbivy bed system, small clips on the pillowcase attach directly inside the hood to keep the pillow from shifting around during the night.

For a lighter setup, I sometimes skip the topper entirely and use just the pillowcase and bladder, stuffing a down jacket or fleece inside instead. It’s not quite as comfortable, but it’s an easy way to reduce weight while still maintaining better structure and height than a standard air-only pillow.

Final Thoughts

The Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow weighs a little more than minimalist backpacking pillows, but the added comfort and better night’s sleep make the extra weight well worth carrying.
