When it comes to car camping, I’ve tried countless sleeping bags and pads, but I’ve never been fully satisfied with traditional options. Mummy-shaped bags make me feel claustrophobic and restrict how I move at night, while rectangular bags, though roomier, often lack features found in modern sleeping bags — like draft collars, adjustable hoods, or ways to trap warmth efficiently.

I toss and turn a lot and usually sleep on my side, so I was looking for a car camping sleep system that would let me move naturally, stay warm, and feel closer to how I sleep at home. For this review, I tested the Zenbivy ZipBed Overland Bundle, a system designed to address those challenges and provide a more comfortable night’s sleep outdoors.

The Unique Design of Zenbivy Beds

Zenbivy Beds are designed for campers who want a more open, flexible sleep setup than a traditional sleeping bag allows. The system uses a quilt-and-sheet design that stays aligned as you move, letting you roll, stretch, or shift positions without waking up to twisted fabric or cold gaps.

Features of the ZipBed Overland

The quilt drapes like a comforter, letting you shift naturally through the night without feeling restricted. The soft Pongee fabric is quiet and gentle against the skin, giving a more home-like feel than typical sleeping bag materials. Its fully rectangular shape also makes it useful beyond sleep — you can wrap it around yourself for extra warmth at camp, use it as a blanket while sitting outside, or layer it with other bedding for added comfort.

At the top, a center cinch traps warmth without collapsing the edges, and the sides can be tucked into the hood to block drafts. A draft collar adds another layer of insulation where heat loss is most common.

The adjustable footbox provides flexibility for different temperatures. On warmer nights, it can be left fully open for airflow, and on colder nights, it can be cinched closed to trap warmth.

The fully insulated, oversized hood fits any size pillow and keeps it secure throughout the night. Unlike the tight, confining hoods on traditional sleeping bags, it feels spacious and unrestricted while still providing warmth, and it includes a small pocket for stowing essentials.

The quilt and fitted sheet work seamlessly together but are also compatible with any camping mattress and pillow you choose. The bundle simply brings everything together in one convenient package, making it easy to get started with a complete, comfortable setup.

Flex 3D Mattress

A sleeping pad is just as important for comfort as the bedding you use. The Flex 3D is a self-inflating camping mattress, which means foam inside expands when you open the valve, drawing in air for a stable, cushioned surface. Unlike typical inflatable air mattresses, it doesn’t feel floppy or unstable — it provides consistent support across the whole pad and is much more comfortable due to the cushioning effect of the foam.

Features of the Flex 3D

At 3 inches thick, this camping mattress strikes a balance between comfort and practicality. The mattress is built around horizontally-cored urethane foam for lasting support. A soft, four-way stretch 50D polyester knit top improves comfort by easing pressure points, and the 75D polyester taffeta bottom provides grip and durability.

Adjusting the mattress is straightforward. I fully inflate it, lie down, and release air gradually until it feels supportive without being too firm. A quick check is sitting sideways and leaning on one elbow — too stiff, let out some air; starting to bottom out, add a little back. This simple approach provides consistent support without feeling rigid.

The 3D construction keeps the edges stable rather than tapering off, so it feels more like a real mattress and less like a typical air pad. With a high R-value of 7.4, it insulates very well, even in colder conditions.

The BYOP Pillowcase is a small but practical part of the bundle. I appreciated being able to use a full-size pillow from home, and having the fabric match the rest of the system made it feel cohesive and comfortable. The pillow fits perfectly inside the hood, staying securely in place all night, and the pillowcase is easy to remove and wash, which helps keep my pillow clean.

Dry Sack

I use the 15-liter Zenbivy Dry Sack to compress and protect my Overland quilt and sheet in the car. Its one-way valve lets air escape as you pack but won’t let any back in, so I can press out the air and fold down the roll top three times. Unlike other compression sacks that end up rigid, this one can be molded to fit the space you have. The dry sack also has a watertight seal and is made from very durable, lightweight fabric—perfect for keeping gear compact and protected.

My Experience Using This Setup

I tested the full ZipBed Overland Bundle on a bed platform in my Honda CR-V during a recent trip to the Oregon Coast and found it very comfortable. The quilt allowed for freedom of movement — I could shift positions without getting caught up in the bedding — while the mattress provided a soft, supportive base for sleeping comfortably. Over multiple nights, that combination translated into deeper, more consistent rest, making sleeping outdoors feel effortless rather than a compromise.

I especially appreciated how the fabric felt soft and quiet — not slick or slippery like a typical sleeping bag — which added to the home-like comfort of the system. On this trip, overnight lows were in the high 30s, and I stayed warm throughout the night without any cold drafts. Based on this experience, the quilt’s 25-degree rating seems accurate.

The Flex 3D pad added a noticeable level of comfort to this setup. Its 3-inch thickness gave me a bit more headroom on my car’s sleeping platform than thicker pads I’ve used, which made it easier to sit up and move around inside the vehicle. At the same time, the high R-value provided excellent insulation — even on chilly nights, the pad never felt cold under me.
