On a sunny day in February, we spent the morning exploring Short Sand Beach and hiked a few of the short trails in Oswald West State Park.
Oregon’s largest campground has a long history, featuring a military installation dating back to the Civil War, and the remains of Peter Iredale shipwreck from 1906.
Secluded Crescent Beach is one of my favorite locations on the Oregon Coast. Bounded on the north by Ecola Point and on the south by Chapman Point, this pocket beach is only accessible via a 1.2 mile hike.
During the first warm days of spring, I camped for two nights at Cape Perpetua, exploring its dramatic coastline – stopping for a beach walk at Seal Rock Wayside on my way home.

Part of the Three Capes Scenic Tour on the Oregon Coast, the sandstone formations at Cape Kiwanda have been sculpted over time by the ocean. A steep climb up the dunes lead to views of this unique and constantly changing landscape.
Cape Lookout is a narrow headland that juts westward into the Pacific for over two miles. This hike to the end of the cape is moderate due to the trail condition – full of roots to maneuver and often very muddy – but worth it for the views.
The Cape Perpetua Scenic Area contains some of the best remaining old growth forest on the Oregon Coast. This hike includes the Cooks Ridge, Gwynn Creek and Oregon Coast Trails for a 6 mile loop.
On this two-night camping trip, we stayed at an oceanfront campground, watched king tides crash against the rocky shore, and hiked through an old-growth coastal forest.
The Southern Oregon Coast is scenic and rugged, with sea stacks and tree-topped islands along the coast line.
Located near Coos Bay, the Sunset Bay campground provides access to several scenic miles of the Oregon Coast Trail, which winds its way along the shoreline from Sunset Bay all the way to Cape Arago.
On this camping trip, we spent two nights at Beverly Beach State Park near Newport, Oregon, and explored Devils Punchbowl and Otter Crest Beach at sunset.
