To reach Wizard Island, you’ll need to purchase a half-day ticket for the boat ride from Cleetwood Cove. From the parking lot, it’s a 1.1 mile walk down to the boat ramp, with 700 feet of elevation loss (to be gained on the way back!). The boat ride to Wizard Island goes fairly quick, and then they drop you off for several hours. Make note of the time you need to return or you’ll pay a hefty fine.
On Wizard Island, the hike to the summit and back is 1.1 miles roundtrip, with another 700 ft in elevation gain. The hike is fairly easy, winding up and around on a rocky trail for the first segment, then on a gravel and dirt path. At the summit, you can peer down into the cauldron of this former volcano. There are a couple of trails that lead to the bottom. The rim is exposed, except for small sections with ancient white bark pines. A path leads all the way around the rim.
The return boat ride circles the lake, with a ranger providing information on Crater Lake’s geology, historic events and more.
