hike: Tomlike Mountain via Ant Hill Trail

Tomlike Mountain is located on Wooly Horn Ridge, between the Columbia River and Mount Hood. An unmarked trail leads to the rocky summit and long ridge on Tomlike, with views from Mount Rainier to Mount Jefferson.

We started on the Ant Hill Trail at Wahtum Lake. This trail doesn’t head down to the lake, and instead, rises above it to join the Herman Creek Trail near the unmarked trail to Tomlike Mountain. Turn right on the Herman Creek Trail and in about 1/10 of a mile, look for an obvious trail on the left, just before the Herman Creek Trail makes a sharp turn to the right to head down to Mud Lake.

The unmarked trail to Tomlike is difficult to follow at times, and it helps to stay to the right on the ridge until you reach an open rocky area with shorter trees. Find your way through this section, looking for cairns and an obvious tread to follow. Scramble up a section of large boulders and flat rocks, then continue towards Tomlike, which you can see for quite a ways as you head towards it. The trail is a little steep as you get closer to the top, but once you reach the summit, walk on the long ridge for views of the Columbia River Gorge, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams and Mount Rainier.
