On this mid-July trip, we camped near Snowgrass Flat and did a loop hike on the PCT and Bypass Trails. We attempted to reach Goat Lake and Old Snowy, but snow levels were still high this early in the season.
While waiting for the alpine areas in the mountains to be snow-free, we decided to spend more time at Siouxon, staying for three nights so we would have time to do more exploration.
Wahtum Lake is located west of Hood River, between Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge. There are many trails that cross through this area, including Eagle Creek, Herman Creek and the PCT.
Crater Lake averages 44 feet of snow each year, and is a great winter snow backpacking location since it’s the only time camping on the rim is allowed.

The Oregon Coast offers very few opportunities for backpacking. The hiker’s camp on Tillamook Head, while intended for people thru-hiking the Oregon Coast Trail, has a designated camp area with wood shelters as well as space for tents.
